The South Holston River is approximately 112 miles long and a great fly fishing trout stream that starts its headwaters at Sugar Grove in Wythe County Virginia and joins up with the North Fork in Kingsport Tennessee. There is a hydroelectric dam below South Holston Lake that also aides in flood control. Below South Holston Dam is a weir dam and step grates. The weir and grates provide oxygenated water that is released into the South Holston River. The South Holston River fishes great year round due to the constent, cold water temperatures. The rich waters of this river creates a healthy environment for aquatic insects which in turn provides for a great trout habitat, big trout too.
The South Holston river is one of the top brown trout fly fishing fisheries on the east coast and has a great rainbow trout population too. The scenery here is very nice and the water is beautiful. This river is one that should be experienced and dry fly fishing is common .
We float the South Holston River in a Hyde drift boat. The South Holston river is one we float when they are generating water. The TVA cannot be generating water to wade the South Holston river while fly fishing. So both types of trips depend on generation schedules. TVA provides these schedules to keep us up to date. You can view the generation schedules also before we go fly fishing, you can download the apps for your phone or view on-line to see the generation release schedules for South Holston Dam.
