The Watauga River is 60 miles long and a great fly fishing trout stream that starts its headwaters on the slopes of Grandfather Mountain in Watauga County, North Carolina and cascades into Watauga Lake in North Carolina/Tennessee. Watauga Lake is the third cleanest lake in the nation and is surrounded by the Cherokee National Forrest. The lake is formed by Watauga Dam and followed by Wilbur Dam. This river fishes great year round due to the constent cold temperatures of a generated river(tailwater). They can keep this water cold all year long due to the fact they release the water from the bottom of the lake.
The Watauga river is one of the top fly fishing fisheries on the east coast and has one of the best rainbow trout populations. The scenery here is great and the water is a spectacular blueish green. It has large deep pools and shallow riffles which makes perfect trout habitat for fly fishing.
We float the Watauga River in a Hyde drift boat, but you can get out of the boat in certain places to wade while fly fishing. This river is best floated when they are not generating water for electricity. So the trip depends on generation schedules. TVA provides these schedules to keep us up to date. You can view the generation schedules also before we go fly fishing, you can download the apps for your phone or view on-line to see the generation release schedules for Wilbur Dam.
